Joining Our Meetings

New visitors are entirely welcome. If you have practised meditation elsewhere, you are invited to try our approach and see if you find it helpful. There is no charge to attend, though voluntary contributions are appreciated, and you are welcome to bring a friend.

Please contact us before your first visit. We will gladly help you work out a comfortable sitting position, explain the background of the tradition, and guide you through the meditation itself. It is completely normal to be unsure or have doubts—feel free to say exactly what is on your mind.

The Evening Schedule

Our regular meetings follow a steady, traditional structure. The evening service runs much like any service within the Soto Zen tradition, adapted for a lay group without a resident monk.

  • Arrival and Setup: If you arrive a few minutes early, we use this time to transform the space together. We erect the altar and arrange the chairs, mats, and cushions for the sitting.
  • The Service: We begin by reading  a translated text originally written by the Zen master Dogen.
  • Meditation Practice: We sit for two 20 to 30-minute periods of silent meditation (Zazen). These are separated by a short period of mindful walking meditation (Kinhin) to relieve the physical body.
  • Tea and Dharma: After the formal practice concludes, we share a casual pot of tea and hold an open Dharma discussion before wrapping up the evening.

Day Retreats

Two or three times a year, we invite a monk from one of our affiliated temples to guide a full-day retreat. This provides a rare opportunity to withdraw from the noise of daily life, maintain silence, and turn completely inward for the day.

  • Extended Practice: The day consists of four to five longer meditation periods, lasting 30 to 40 minutes each, presented and guided by the visiting monk.
  • Shared Meal: Attendees bring vegetarian food to share for a communal lunch.
  • Personal Guidance: Throughout the day, there is dedicated time to have private, one-on-one discussions with the monk regarding your personal practice.

Our next day retreat is scheduled for October. To attend, you should be comfortable staying in silence for a prolonged period. As this is not a drop-in event, please get in touch if you wish to join us.
